CHEERS TO CNN Philippines’ Network News for moving traffic reporting from EDSA to other roads in the capital. While EDSA serves as the most extensive artery connecting five cities in Metro Manila, there are many other thoroughfares where commuters suffer the same plight or where traffic congestion has become worse in recent weeks.

Network News aired “Easing Metro Manila Traffic” on January 21, with Camille Abadicio reporting on other streets and roads with heavy traffic such as Eliptical Road and Katipunan in Quezon City, Roxas Boulevard and Osmeña Highway in Manila, and Andrews Avenue and Domestic Road in Pasay.

Network News is CNN Philippines’ primetime newscast.

Some motorists interviewed on Shaw Boulevard also complained of longer travel times compared to previous months. The report also checked the condition on Commonwealth Avenue. Quezon City District Traffic Sector 5 Chief Investigator SPO1 Edgardo Talacay noted that factors such as the volume of vehicles coming from many areas and the lack of discipline as manifested by motorists who recklessly change lanes as well as jaywalkers and illegal terminals contribute to congestion during the rush hour.

Traffic Discipline Office Director IV Atty. Crisanto Saruca Jr., another source cited by the report, observed that road accidents contribute a lot to the worsening traffic congestion. He also said that solving the traffic mess in congested roads requires many steps, including developing a reliable mass transportation system and reducing the number of vehicles on the road. In addition motorists must observe traffic rules, and use loading and unloading bays, while pedestrians using footbridges and pedestrian lanes are also important factors.
